4-4-2025 – Former Binance chief executive Changpeng Zhao has forged a strategic alliance with Kyrgyzstan’s National Investment Agency, marking a pivotal shift in the nation’s approach to blockchain technology and cryptocurrency governance.
The mountainous republic, blessed with abundant hydroelectric resources, is steadily emerging as an appealing destination for cryptocurrency mining operations, with water-generated power contributing nearly a third of its energy portfolio. Yet, industry observers note that a substantial portion of this green energy potential remains unexploited.
The partnership, formalised through a memorandum of understanding, will see Zhao lending his considerable expertise to bolster Kyrgyzstan’s technological infrastructure. The arrangement encompasses comprehensive guidance on blockchain implementation, virtual asset management, and cybersecurity measures, with a particular focus on developing local talent.
President Sadyr Zhaparov has thrown his weight behind the initiative, highlighting its transformative potential for Kyrgyzstan’s economic landscape and its promise to unlock fresh opportunities across business sectors and society at large.
This advisory role adds to Zhao’s growing portfolio of governmental consultancies, following his recent appointments in Malaysia and discussions with officials in the United Arab Emirates and Bhutan. These endeavours mark his return to public service following his release from American custody, where he faced charges related to money laundering.
Zhao, who shared the announcement via social media platform X on 3 April, expressed his commitment to assisting governments in refining their cryptocurrency regulatory frameworks. His humanitarian efforts were recently demonstrated through a substantial donation of 1000 BNB to support those affected by seismic activity in Thailand and Myanmar.
